Comparable-store sales for pharmacy and OTC cough and cold medicines, which are included in front-end sales, were lower than last year’s because of this year’s much milder flu season, the company noted.

Execs see CVS.com as profitable in 2002

WOONSOCKET, R.I. – March 2 – CVS Corp. noted Wednesday that its CVS.com online unit will be profitable in 2002, according to a Reuters report.

Larry Zigerelli, executive vice president of CVS and chairman of CVS.com, told the news service that CVS has no plans to spin off the online unit or create a separate tracking stock to capitalize on today’s typical high valuations of Internet properties. “We don’t have any plans for that strategically because it’s so core to our business,” he told Reuters.

Zigerelli said the online business, which resulted in large part from CVS’s purchase last June of soma.com, is growing at 10 percent a week. He declined to quantify specifically what he termed a small revenue base compared with CVS’s overall sales.

Kmart launches ’strategic imperatives’ plan

TROY, Mich. – Aug. 11 – In the wake of a disappointing second quarter, Kmart Corp chairman and chief executive Chuck Conaway told financial analysts that the company plans to invest $2 billion in infrastructure over the next two years and will reallocate its capital for the third and fourth quarters.

He said that the company has three overarching strategic imperatives: to dramatically improve retail execution; to create a customer-centric culture; and to evolve into a marketing- and sales-driven organization with a defined and differentiated market position.

Conaway that all Kmart stores will have updated scanners by October and new point-of-sale registers by August 2001.

Also in October, the company will launch a customer service measurement system that uses interactive voice response to get feedback from 15 million to 20 million customers a year. Kmart also will open a new customer service center. In an effort to hone focus and control, the company will reduce the store-count responsibility for its district managers to eight stores each from about 13 stores.

“These steps are designed to dramatically revamp our technology processes, change management capabilities and systems over the next 24 months,” Conaway emphasized.

As reported Thursday, Kmart lost $448 million, or 93 cents a share including charges, on revenue of $9 billion for the second quarter. This compared with a loss of $92 million, or 15 cents a share, on revenue of $8.78 billion in the same period a year ago.

PlanetRx.com retains financial adviser, reports quarterly earnings

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO – June 20 – PlanetRx.com expects revenues for the second quarter to be approximately $9.0 million and has retained Goldman, Sachs & Co. to explore various strategic and financial alternatives.

The company estimates that quarterly revenues for the remainder of fiscal 2000 also will be lower than originally projected. The revised estimates are largely attributable to systems integration and marketing issues surrounding its initial agreement with Express Scripts as well as an overall reduction in marketing spending. Based on current expectations, the company believes it is positioned to achieve sequential revenue growth of 15 percent to 25 percent for the third and fourth quarters 2000.

The company also announced the restructuring of its agreement with pharmacy benefits manager Express Scripts, eliminating PlanetRx.com’s annual $14.6 million payment to Express Scripts.

PlanetRx.com recently reduced its workforce by 15 percent, streamlining its operations and reducing personnel assigned to projects not core to the company’s growth.

“We are refining our strategic relationships and taking the necessary steps to transition to a business which focuses on healthy revenue growth,” said PlanetRx.com Chief Executive Officer Michael Beindorff. “Our new agreement with Express Scripts more closely aligns the interests of both parties, significantly reduces our future cash obligations and puts PlanetRx.com in a better position to explore opportunities to provide private label and mail-order services to Express Scripts.”

For the second quarter to date (through June 16, 2000), PlanetRx.com membership has increased by 250,000 to more than 1 million members. The company added approximately 110,000 new customers thus far in the quarter, increasing the total customer count to approximately 510,000.

PlanetRx.com anticipates releasing its financial results for the second quarter of 2000 during the last week of July 2000.

Rite Aid set to settle brokers’ lawsuit

CAMP HILL, Pa. – June 19 – Rite has agreed to settle a lawsuit with manufacturers’ representatives, according to a report in today’s Wall Street Journal. Early in 1999, the chain had informed the representatives that it wanted to deal directly with manufacturers at its headquarters.

Edwin Sisam of Minneapolis, an attorney for the manufacturers’ representatives, told the newspaper that settlement terms were confidential. “My understanding is that Rite Aid is going to allow brokers to call on them.”

When it announced the ban in 1999, Rite Aid said the shift was intended to facilitate closer relationships with its suppliers.

Sisam said the lawsuit, originally brought in state court in California but later moved to state court in Pennsylvania, argued that manufacturers had a legal right to designate their sales representatives, and Rite Aid’s ban interfered with contractual relations between brokers and manufacturers.
